Our Mission

AND TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Our Mission is to provide a quality and developmentally appropriate preschool program for children and their families.

The curriculum at The Horizon Academy is built upon research and knowledge about how children best learn.  In particular how children gain more from the active exploration of their environment and initiating activities they are interested in.  The needs of the whole child are considered in lesson planning taking into account the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of each individual.  In addition, the curriculum focuses on what research has shown teachers deem most critical for kindergarten readiness which includes social competency, curiosity, listening, and independence.

Our goals include:

  • Offering a wide variety of activities in a stimulating environment
  • Providing opportunities for discovery
  • Learning by process, not product
  • Development of self, and of self-worth
  • Development of social and interpersonal relationships
  • Development of problem solving skills
  • Learning constructive ways to express various emotions
  • Refining interest span
  • Strengthening families through community involvement

To accomplish these goals the curriculum includes the following activities each day for the children to choose from:

  • Literacy
  • Art
  • Math
  • Science
  • Sensory
  • Pretend Play

    • Older children have more opportunities to practice leadership
    • Older children also show more pro-social behaviors, such as sharing and helping
